Ashland is a Midlands based acoustic, folk and roots duo with Kathryn Marsh on vocals and David Sutherland on guitar/vocals. The idea for the duo came from Kathryn’s search for a musician willing to learn songs penned by her father; songs which helped form many of the musical memories of her childhood. David, a multi-instrumentalist, and songwriter with an impressive history of collaborating with others offered to help. Both musicians soon realised that Kathryn’s pure, yet powerful vocals worked well with David’s own material and so in October 2015, Ashland was formed.
Tracks from their well-received debut E.P. ’Funny Old World’, have been played on many community radio stations across the UK. Since forming they have been a featured showcase artist at Laurel Canyon Music and also received positive reviews for their debut release from Fatea Magazine and Folk Monthly.
Gigs so far include Moseley Folk Festival 2017; Love Folk Festival; “Folkin’ Great” Festival at The Crescent Theatre and ‘Gramophone Armageddon’ at The Convent. Gramophone Armageddon also featured Eliza Carthy and the Wayward Band, Sam Sweeney, Boo Hewardine, Fleetwood Cave, Tony Hazzard, Luke Tuchscherer and Edd Donovan. The concert was streamed live and online via Netgigs and can be viewed on the ‘Videos’ page.
They have been fortunate enough to support BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominee, Ange Hardy, multi-award winning singer-songwriter Steve Tilston; Jim Moray, Blue Rose Code; Lady Maisery; O’Hooley & Tidow and Hannah White.
Further plans include a confirmed support with Zervas and Pepper (Kitchen Garden Café – 10/10/17) and a private house concert for ‘Live at Thornsett Road’ in London (18/11/17). Further details can be found on the ‘Gigs’ page.
They are in the process of recording demos of songs that will form part of their eagerly awaited debut album, which is due out in 2018.
